Nutritional Supplement

Gypsum can be used as a part of a blend of supplementary nutrients and given to cows pre and post calving. We advise you to consult your vet for guidelines and advice on using gypsum.

Gypsum is useful as a calcium supplement in the transition period for dairy cows, 2 – 4 weeks pre & post calving, to counteract the effects of high potassium & sodium concentrations on hypocalcemia ( Milk fever). Gypsum is 100 times more soluble than lime and is more suitable for the cow's digestive system during this period.

Another option is as soon as cows have calved gypsum can be dusted onto the pasture. Dusting will result in around 50% of the gypsum being ingested. The other 50% will wash into the soil to improve soil structure and resilience to pugging. We advise you to consult your vet for guidelines and advice on using gypsum.

Animal Bedding

Gypsum can be added to bedding material to absorb moisture produced by animals housed in sheds.

Gypsum has a chemical reaction with the animal's urine that locks up the ammonia in the urine to form ammonium sulphate. This reduces odour significantly and reduces the effects of the ammonia creating burning or marking on the animals. The bedding material, which includes the gypsum amendment, can be applied to pasture and will release ammonium sulphate slowly over the growing season. For poultry manure, the addition of gypsum into the wood shavings will improve the fertiliser value of the spent litter.
