What is ClayBreaker™ made from?

ClayBreaker™ is manufactured from Gypsum; a natural, non-toxic, organic mineral composed of Calcium Sulphate ( CaSO4 – 2H2O). It is milled into a finely ground powder to enable rapid absorption and faster results.

ClayBreaker™ naturally contains 23% Calcium and 18% Sulphur, both are essential plant nutrients. Calcium strengthens cell walls making plants more resistant to insects and disease. Sulphur is an essential element for the development and production of a green protein rich leaf and is used in photosynthesis.

What does ClayBreaker™ do?

  • Helps clay particles aggregate together to form micro aggregates which encourages drainage, loosens and opens up hard, compacted soil ClayBreaker™ is pH neutral, which means it won’t burn plants or change soil acidity.

  • Improves soil drainage of excess water and reduces surface water pooling

  • Builds a deeper topsoil by encouraging microbial activity in the soil

  • Reduces incidence of root diseases such as phytophthora, moss and fungal diseases

  • Enables plant roots to penetrate deeper, resulting in stronger plant growth

  • Increases the absorption and availability of water, air and nutrients to plants

  • Improves moisture retention during dry conditions, reducing soil crusting and cracking

  • Enhances the effectiveness of fertilisers

  • Provides Calcium which strengthens cell walls making plants more resistant to insects and disease

  • Provides Sulphur, necessary for the development of green protein rich leaves

  • Enhances beneficial microbial activity in the soil such as worms and other beneficial soil microbial communities

  • Assists the composting process and decreases unpleasant odours when applied to compost heaps

Where can it be used?

It is safe to use on lawns, vegetables, flowers, citrus, fruit trees, shrubs, large trees including acid loving New Zealand natives, rhododendrons, camellias and strawberries.

ClayBreaker™ works best on hard, heavy, compacted soil and clay. Soils with a clay content of 30% or more respond particularly well to ClayBreaker™. Suitable for application to raised beds where the soil or mix is compacted or poorly draining.

The benefits of ClayBreaker™ will be limited on soil that is already free draining and well structured. Lower rates of ClayBreaker™ can be applied onto well drained soils for the Calcium and Sulphur nutritional benefits.

How do I apply it?

For best results dig ClayBreaker™ into the soil prior to planting. For established lawns and trees, spread on the soil surface and water in well.

For new lawns, apply ClayBreaker™ directly to the clay areas, apply topsoil and sow lawn seed or lay ready lawn. Claybreaker can be spread on the surface of an existing lawn, then water in well.

When planting new trees, we recommend digging a hole twice the depth and twice the width of the plants' existing root base. Spread Winstone Gypsum™ ClayBreaker™ in the hole and then plant the tree.

How much should be applied and how often?

For best results apply ClayBreaker™ twice a year in spring and autumn to provide maximum benefit.
